The detention occurred on Tuesday, one day after a dramatic and failed attempt by plain-clothed ICE agents to apprehend him at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas. Footage of the initial Las Vegas encounter, which showed two masked agents tackling and attempting to handcuff Mr. Nguyen while bystanders filmed, has circulated widely on social media and drawn significant public attention.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, the agents in Las Vegas abandoned their initial arrest attempt to de-escalate the situation after a crowd gathered. Mr. Nguyen, who was born in Vietnam, was left partially handcuffed at the airport before local police intervened, removed the restraints, and allowed him to continue his travel. The Department of Homeland Security stated that Mr. Nguyen entered the United States legally in 2013 on a visa that expired in 2015, and he had remained in the country in violation of immigration laws.
