This approach is intended to provide more reliable, near-instant communication during emergencies such as bushfires, floods, cyclones, and public health or security incidents.
Authorities have emphasized that the upcoming event is strictly a test and requires no action from the public. Residents are advised not to call emergency services, such as Triple Zero, upon receiving the notification. The government has provided resources to help the community prepare, including specific guidance for older Australians, people with disabilities, and multicultural communities.
While the system is designed to enhance public safety, the intrusive nature of the alerts has prompted specific advice for vulnerable groups. Domestic violence advocates and government agencies have noted that individuals who keep hidden or secret devices for personal safety may wish to turn their phones off or switch them to aeroplane mode before the test.
