There is also the question of energy efficiency. Converting electricity into hydrogen and then back into electricity via fuel cells results in significant energy loss compared to direct electrification. Some experts suggest that resources might be better spent on accelerating the electrification of the remaining rail network, which is a proven, highly efficient technology. They caution that the focus on hydrogen could be a distraction from more practical, immediate solutions that could yield faster results for the public.

Finally, the long-term maintenance and safety of hydrogen storage systems in a high-density environment like Indian Railways remain a concern for some observers. As the project moves beyond the pilot phase, the government will need to provide transparent data on operational costs and safety protocols. Until these questions are addressed, many remain skeptical about whether hydrogen can truly replace diesel on a national scale without placing an undue financial burden on the state and the taxpayer.
