Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor's recent comments about "Tanah Melayu" (Malay Land) have been widely criticized as racially insensitive. Supporters of Sanusi, including Perikatan Nasional's information chief Tan Sri Annuar Musa, contend that the remarks were taken out of context. Annuar emphasized that Sanusi's speech aimed to instill patriotism among Malays by highlighting the historical significance of "Tanah Melayu" as the homeland of the Malay community. He argued that the comments were not intended to demean other communities but to encourage Malays to appreciate their heritage and unity.
Sanusi himself defended his statements, clarifying that he did not question the loyalty or citizenship of non-Malay Malaysians. He stated that his comments were focused on the political and economic position of the Malays and were not meant to incite division among Malaysia's diverse communities.
Proponents argue that emphasizing Malay heritage is essential for the community's empowerment within Malaysia's multi-ethnic society, and that Sanusi's remarks seek to strengthen, rather than divide, the nation.
