Singapore's Monetary Authority (MAS) has raised alarms about the growing cybersecurity threats posed by artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum computing to the financial sector. In response, MAS, in collaboration with the Association of Banks in Singapore (ABS), has established a task force aimed at bolstering cyber defenses and addressing AI-driven risks.

The task force, known as the AI-Driven Cyber and Technology Risk Taskforce, includes representatives from MAS, ABS, DBS, OCBC, UOB, Singapore Exchange (SGX), NETS, and Banking Computer Services. Its primary focus is to enhance financial institutions' capabilities in utilizing AI for cybersecurity, conduct trials on advanced tools, and develop industry guidelines for responding to AI-induced threats.

MAS Managing Director Chia Der Jiun highlighted the dual challenges posed by AI and quantum computing. He noted that AI can be exploited to create more personalized and persuasive phishing attacks, while quantum computing threatens to undermine existing encryption methods, potentially compromising data security in the medium term.

To address these concerns, MAS plans to issue "supervisory expectations" for quantum resilience later this year, outlining progressive timelines for financial institutions to adopt quantum-safe practices. The goal is for institutions to achieve quantum resilience before the end of the decade.

The establishment of this task force underscores the urgency for financial institutions to proactively strengthen their cyber defenses against emerging AI and quantum computing threats. The collaboration between MAS, ABS, and key financial entities aims to foster a unified approach to safeguarding the sector's digital infrastructure.

As the financial industry continues to integrate advanced technologies, staying ahead of potential cyber threats remains a critical priority. The effectiveness of the task force's initiatives and the timely implementation of quantum-safe measures will be pivotal in ensuring the resilience of Singapore's financial sector.
