Under the proposed rules, operators of major data centres will be required to fund their own power generation and pay for necessary water infrastructure. The government also plans to introduce legislation by early 2027 to formalize these standards, following consultations with state and territory leaders through the national cabinet process.
Beyond infrastructure, the government has taken a firm stance on intellectual property, declaring that Australian creative work will not be used to train AI models without consent or compensation. The Prime Minister emphasized that writers, artists, and musicians must retain control over their intellectual property, framing the unauthorized use of such content as a form of theft.
